Even if you live and work in an area designated as less risk of an earthquake quake, don’t dismiss the threat. Earthquakes can occur anywhere in New Zealand.
Hazards that workers may encounter during and after an earthquake include being struck by a building’s structural components, furnishings and non-structural building parts or improperly stored materials; being burned by fires resulting from gas leaks or electrical shorts; and being exposed to released chemicals.
WorkSafe recommends that you prepare for an earthquake with the following measures:
- Ensure that the people working in or near your building know what to do in the event of an earthquake, whatever the seismic rating of the building.
- Practice earthquake drills, prepare survival kits and keep up to date contact information. Your council and civil defence can help you prepare your workplace to survive an earthquake emergency.
- Work with your building owner to ensure that any critical systems in the building will function during an emergency.
Practice your procedures during New Zealand’s Shake Out Drill on Thursday 18 October 2018 at 9:30 am. For more information or to register your workplace, go to shakeout.govt.nz.
If an earthquake occurs, workers should stay in their safe place until the shaking stops and remain alert for potential aftershocks. They also should be on the lookout for fires (the most common earthquake-related building hazard); use the stairs instead of elevators; and, if they’re outside when the earthquake begins, stay outside, crouch down and cover their heads.
WorkSafe also recommends that employers identify and minimise potential hazards to their workers if an earthquake occurs. That's why we've created this checklist. As you work through the points, you will gain the knowledge to know the extent of your earthquake safety risk.
